5. Windows Spotlight As Lock Screen Background
When Windows 10 was under development, the Insider Preview builds came with a new feature which used to show a new background picture on Lock Screen at each user login. We shared those secret Lock Screen background images in following topic:
Now that feature is called Windows Spotlight and Microsoft has added the feature back to Windows 10 November Update build. You can enable/disable Windows Spotlight as Lock Screen background using Settings -> Personalization -> Lock screen page. Just select Windows Spotlight from the background drop-down box.

Download Windows 10 Enterprise and LTSB Free 90-day Trial Versions

UPDATE: New 90-day trial versions are available of Windows 10 Enterprise build 10586 (version 1511) and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB build 10240.
We told you earlier in point 11 of following topic that Microsoft will release a free 90-day trial version of Windows 10 after releasing Windows 10 final version to public:
Things You Should Know and Do Before Upgrading to Windows 10
Now the time has come. The fully functional and fully-featured 90-day trial versions ofWindows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB (Long Term Servicing Branch) are available for download in form of offline ISO files. The trial version build of Windows 10 Enterprise is build 10586 which was recently released as November update to Windows 10 users. The trial version build of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB is build 10240 as no November Update was released to LTSB users.
The release of trial versions was already expected as Microsoft always releases trial versions of its latest operating systems to public. Microsoft has done the same in past when the company released Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 trial versions to public.
Most of the people who were using genuine Windows 7 or 8.1, have already upgraded to Windows 10 as a part of the free upgrade program. Also there are many people who are participating in Windows Insider program and already enjoying Windows 10 RTM in their systems.
But there might be a few people who are not using a qualifying OS in their computers to free upgrade to Windows 10 or they just don't want to upgrade to Windows 10 and first want to test it.
The free 90-day trial version of Windows 10 might be very helpful for such people who want to try Windows 10 first before upgrading or purchasing the new OS.
Also there are many features which are only available in Windows 10 Enterprise and not available in Home or Pro editions such as Windows To Go Creator, AppLocker, Direct Access, Credential Guard, Device Guard, operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management, etc. So installing this trial version of Windows 10 Enterprise might help you in testing those exclusive features as well.
And many people wanted to try the most popular and fastest Windows 10 edition i.e.Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB in their computers. This edition is the most lightweight edition of Windows 10 as it doesn't contain any modern (metro) app like Store, Xbox, Cortana, Microsoft Edge, etc. It also comes with classic Calculator and Windows Photo Viewer programs which are not present in any other Windows 10 edition. So its a good time to try and test this awesome edition of Windows 10.

If you want to download the trial versions, you can get the full offline ISO files from any of following links:
Both links provide same edition and same ISO files for download. The trial versions are available in both 32-bit (x86) as well as 64-bit (x64) versions. Also following language editions are available for download: English (United States), English (Great Britain), Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil).
Please note that during installation, Windows will prompt you to activate. But you'll not require to enter any product key. For recovery purposes, you may use following product key if required:
VTNMT-2FMYP-QCY43-QR9VK-WTVCK
You can install the trial version in a virtualization software such as Virtual Box or built-inHyper-V feature. If you like it, you can upgrade your PC to Windows 10 otherwise keep using your existing Windows version.

[Windows 10 Tip] Add, Remove, Rename or Change Shortcuts on the Bottom-Left of Start Menu

Today I'm going to share a very useful and secret trick with you all which I found today while customizing Start Menu program shortcuts in Windows 10. As you know we can customize names, icons and location of almost all program shortcuts in Start Menu/Start Screen by going to any of following folders:
%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\
Both these folders contain all program shortcuts which you see in Start Menu/Start Screen. We have posted tutorials to add your own shortcuts or change icons and labels of existing shortcuts in Start Menu or Start Screen in past which can be found at following links:
  • How to Change Icons and Text Labels (Names) of Start Screen Tiles in Windows 8 and 8.1?
  • How to Pin Any File, Folder or Program Shortcut to Start Screen in Windows 8 and Later?
Today I was trying to create a few groups to organize existing program shortcuts in Windows 10 Start Menu, so I opened "%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\" folder and during that process when I moved to the parent directory i.e. "%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\", I found an interesting folder "Start Menu Places". To my surprise, I found that this folder contains shortcuts of all icons which are shown at the bottom-left of Windows 10 Start Menu.
Windows_10_Start_Menu_Left_Shortcuts_Location.png
Actually Windows 10 allows you to show following built-in shortcuts and links at the left-bottom area of Start Menu:
  • File Explorer
  • Settings
  • Documents
  • Downloads
  • Music
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • HomeGroup
  • Network
  • Personal Folder (User Profile)
You can add or remove these predefined shortcuts on Start Menu using Settings -> Personalization -> Start -> Choose which folders appear on Start option.
Customize_Windows_10_Start_Menu.png
But you can only show or hide these predefined shortcuts on Start Menu. You can't add new shortcuts to that place. Microsoft has also removed ability to pin any shortcut on the left-side area of Start Menu which was present in older Insider Preview builds of Windows 10.
But today in this tutorial, I'm going to share a secret trick to customize these built-in shortcuts in Windows 10 Start Menu. With the help of this tutorial, you'll be able to:
  • Rename shortcuts on the bottom-left of Windows 10 Start Menu
  • Change shortcut paths on the bottom-left of Windows 10 Start Menu
So you'll be able to change path of these predefined shortcuts to any of your desired folder, drive or any program shortcut and you'll be able to launch your desired programs or files/folders using those shortcuts on Start Menu.
Customize_Windows_10_Start_Menu_Left_Shortcuts.png
So without wasting time lets start the tutorial:
STEP 1:
First of all open following folder:
%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu Places\
You can copy paste above mentioned path in RUN dialog box or This PC (Windows Explorer) addressbar and press Enter. It'll launch the folder.
In the folder, you'll see all 9 shortcuts which can be shown in Start Menu using Settings app except Settings shortcut which is automatically shown by Windows and doesn't need any direct shortcut placed in this "Start Menu Places" folder.
STEP 2:
Now you just need to customize any desired shortcut present in "Start Menu Places" folder. For example, if you don't need "Personal Folder" shortcut, right-click on the shortcut and select Properties option. Alternatively, you can also select the shortcut and press ALT+Enter keys together to directly launch its properties window.
STEP 3:
Now to change the shortcut path, change the value present in "Target" textbox.
Change_Windows_10_Start_Menu_Left_Shortcuts.png
For example if you want this shortcut to launch E: drive, change the value of Target to E:\ and apply changes. If you want this shortcut to launch any of your desired programs, change the value of Target to full path of your desired program's EXE file. For example, to launch Mozilla Firefox change Target field value to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Firefox\firefox.exe".
You'll get a message box that "You'll need to provide administrator permission to change these settings", just click on Continue button.
PS: If you can't modify shortcut, try to take ownership of the shortcut first using this methodand then change the shortcut path. Now it'll work.
STEP 4:
To rename the shortcut, right-click on the shortcut and select Rename option. Alternatively, you can also select the shortcut and press F2 key to directly rename the shortcut.
Now set any desired name to the shortcut and it'll immediately start showing the new name in the Start Menu. If you receive message box asking for administrator permission to rename the shortcut, click on Continue button.
Rename_Windows_10_Start_Menu_Left_Shortcuts.png
You can use the same steps to customize all existing shortcuts in Start Menu. To add or remove any of these predefined shortcuts, open Settings app, go to Personalization -> Startpage and click on Choose which folders appear on Start option. Now you can turn on or off desired shortcuts.
PS: By default Windows 10 opens local folders of Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos when you click on their shortcuts in Start Menu. Using the above mentioned steps, you can change them to launch corresponding libraries similar to Windows 7. Just change their path to following values respectively:
For Documents library: %appdata%\microsoft\windows\libraries\Documents.library-ms
For Music library: %appdata%\microsoft\windows\libraries\Music.library-ms
For Pictures library: %appdata%\microsoft\windows\libraries\Pictures.library-ms
For Videos library: %appdata%\microsoft\windows\libraries\Videos.library-ms
NOTE: If you have modified the shortcuts and now you want to restore default shortcuts, you can download the default shortcuts folder from following link:

[Windows 10 Tip] Get Colors on Titlebars of Inactive (Background) Program Windows

When Windows 10 RTM build 10240 was released, the titlebars of all program windows were pure White. It was too much distracting and was annoying a lot of people. Windows 10 users wanted colored titlebars back just like previous Windows versions.
Microsoft finally listened users complaints and the company enabled colors titlebars in program windows in the recently released Windows 10 November Update build 10586 which is also known as Threshold 2 build.
But there is still a minor issue. The new setting only enables colors on titlebars of active i.e. current program window. The titlebar color of all inactive program windows i.e. background windows is still White which is not pleasing many Windows 10 users. Following image shows how the inactive program windows show White titlebar in Windows 10:
White_Inactive_Titlebar_Windows_10.png
We also posted an exclusive tutorial to tweak this colorization feature of Windows 10. With the help of some Registry tweaks you can have colored Taskbar, Start Menu but White titlebar or you can have dark Taskbar, Start Menu with colored titlebar.
Today in this tutorial, we are going to share a small and easy to use Registry tweak which will allow you to get colors on titlebars of inactive program windows as well. With the help of this tutorial, you'll be able to show colors on all program windows whether the window is active or inactive in Windows 10 as shown in following image:
Colored_Inactive_Titlebar_Windows_10.png
So without wasting time lets share the tweak:
1. Press WIN+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box, type regedit in RUN and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor.
2. Now go to following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\DWM
3. In right-side pane, create a new DWORD and set its name as AccentColorInactive
4. This new DWORD will set the color of titlebar of all inactive program windows which are shown in background. The value of this DWORD is set by the hexadecimal code of desired color. The value can be given in following format:
BBGGRR
Here BB represents Blue, GG represents Green and RR represents Red color value.
Enable_Colors_Inactive_Titlebar_Windows_10.png
You can grab your desired color hexadecimal code from any color website or using an image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Gimp, etc.
For example, if you want to have dark black color of active titlebar, set value of AccentColorDWORD to 111111 and you can set AccentColorInactive DWORD value to 666666 for a little bit lighter titlebar of inactive windows.
Dark_Black_Titlebar_Windows_10.png
NOTE: Keep in mind that generally a color code uses RRGGBB format but the above mentioned DWORD accepts the reverse of the code i.e. BBGGRR. So when you grab the hexadecimal code of your desired color, reverse the digits and set it as the value of AccentColorInactive DWORD.
PS: If you want to set inactive window titlebar color same as active window titlebar color, just double-click on AccentColor DWORD present in right-side pane of Registry Editor, copy its value and paste the set in value field of AccentColorInactive DWORD.
5. Close Registry Editor and Windows will immediately start showing your desired color on titlebars of inactive program windows.
If you want to restore default settings in future, just delete the AccentColorInactive DWORD from Registry Editor.
NOTE: If you are not familiar with Registry editing tasks, we are providing ready-made Registry script to set dark black titlebar for active program window and a little bit lighter titlebar for inactive program windows as shown in above image. Download following ZIP file, extract it and run .REG file. It'll ask for confirmation, accept it:

[Windows 10 Tip] Remove Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Contact Support and Feedback Apps

This exclusive Windows 10 tutorial will help you if:
  • You want to remove Cortana Search app completely from Windows 10
  • You want to get rid of SearchUI.exe service running continuously in background
  • You want to remove Microsoft Edge web browser, Contact Support and Feedback apps in Windows 10
  • You want to remove Lock Screen app completely
  • You want to permanently disable Action Center and don't want any notification in Windows 10
  • You want to disable new modern (metro) style Start Menu and Taskbar jumplists in Windows 10
  • You want to disable new fly-out UI of icons in Taskbar notification area (system tray)
All these things can be done with the help of a few simple steps which we are going to tell in this detailed tutorial.
We know that Windows 10 comes with lots of built-in modern (metro) apps such as Calculator, Mail, Messaging, Phone, Skype, Bing, etc. By default Windows 10 doesn't allow you to uninstall or remove any of these default apps but you can remove these apps using
Although Powershell commands help us in removing built-in apps but following 4 apps can't be removed using Powershell:
Cortana Search - This app provides Microsoft's personal digital assistant Cortana in Windows 10. Cortana app uses the SearchUI.exe process which continuously runs in background and can't be disabled. Even if you kill or end task of SearchUI.exe process using Task Manager, it comes back again within few seconds.
Microsoft Edge - Its a new web browser from Microsoft which supports modern web standards and technologies. If you use Internet Explorer or a 3rd party web browser such as Mozilla FirefoxGoogle Chrome or Opera, you might want to remove this new web browser.
Contact Support - This app can be used to contact Microsoft support team for help and assistance.
Windows Feedback - This app can be used to provide feedback about Windows 10 to Microsoft. Its said that this app regularly collects data and sends it to Microsoft but we can't confirm it.
If you want to remove any or all of the above mentioned system apps in Windows 10, this guide will definitely help you. Today in this tutorial, we are going to share an easy way to disable or remove these system apps in Windows 10.
Windows 10 Modern (Metro) Apps Storage Location
Lets tell you first about these apps location in Windows 10. Actually all modern (metro) apps are divided into following 2 categories by Windows:
  • Standard Windows apps
  • System apps
All apps which you install from Store and all built-in apps such as Mail, Messaging, etc which can be uninstalled using Powershell method are called Windows apps and can be found in following location:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps
This folder is restricted and you can't access this folder.
Now right-click on "WindowsApps" folder and select "Take ownership" option. It'll take some time in taking ownership of the folder and in granting you permission on the folder. Once the process completes, you can double-click on "WindowsApps" folder and can see its content.
Windows_Apps_Folder_Windows_10.png
This folder contains several sub-folders which contain files of all modern apps installed in your computer.
The other category "System Apps" contains essential apps which are required by Windows to provide several UI elements to users. System apps include Microsoft Edge web browser, Cortana search app, Contact Support, Windows Feedback, Lock Screen app, Action Center, Parental Controls, etc. You can find these system apps in following location:
C:\Windows\SystemApps
System_Apps_Folder_Windows_10.png
There is also another folder which contains both Windows apps as well as System apps. You can find it in following location:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages
Replace username term in above mentioned path with your user account name in Windows 10. You can launch this folder directly using following command in RUN dialog box:
%userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages
Local_Packages_Folder_Windows_10.png
This "Packages" folder is used to install apps for user accounts that's why it contains all apps files.
Now lets come back to our main article!
If you want to remove Cortana Search, Microsoft Edge, Contact Support and Windows Feedback apps in Windows 10, you just need to either delete or rename their respective folders present in "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder. We'll not recommend to delete any app folder. Just rename the folder and it'll do the same job. Once you rename any app folder, Windows will be unable to find that app's folder and executable file, thus it'll not be able to run that app in your computer.
Remove Microsoft Edge Web Browser
If you want to remove Microsoft Edge web browser, go to "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder and rename "Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe" folder. Just add anything before the original folder name. For example you can add BACK or ! (Exclamation mark) or any desired text before folder name.
Remove_Cortana_Edge_Contact_Support_Feedback_App_Windows_10.png
We renamed the folder to "BACK_Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe" and it disabled Microsoft Edge web browser completely in Windows 10.
Now if you try to launch the Edge browser from Start Menu, it'll do nothing as Windows will not find the folder and files related to Edge browser.
Remove Contact Support App
If you want to remove Contact Support app, go to "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder and rename "ContactSupport_cw5n1h2txyewy" folder to "BACK_ContactSupport_cw5n1h2txyewy" or any desired name. It'll disable the app completely from running in your system.
Remove Windows Feedback App
If you want to remove Windows Feedback app, go to "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder and rename "WindowsFeedback_cw5n1h2txyewy" folder to "BACK_WindowsFeedback_cw5n1h2txyewy" or any desired name. It'll disable the app completely from running in your system.
Remove Cortana Search (SearchUI.exe) App
Removing Cortana Search app is a tricky task as Cortana app always runs in background using SearchUI.exe service. To remove Cortana app, you'll need to rename "Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy" folder in "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder.
But since SearchUI.exe file runs in background, Windows will not allow you to rename this folder. You'll get an error message that "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again.".
Remove_Cortana_Search_App_Windows_10.png
Keep the error message dialog box opened and then open Task Manager by pressingCtrl+Shift+Esc keys together or by right-clicking on Taskbar and select "Task Manager" option. Now select Cortana from the background processes list and press Delete key or click on "End Task" button.
Kill_Cortana_Process_Windows_10.png
Now immediately click on "Try Again" button present in "Folder in Use" error message dialog box. Now you'll be able to rename Cortana folder and SearchUI.exe file will no longer run in background.
BONUS TIP 1: Disable or Remove Lock Screen App
As we know Windows 10 shows Lock Screen just before the Login Screen (or Sign-in Screen) and you can disable the Lock Screen using Group Policy Editor
If you don't want to restrict Lock Screen using the methods given in above mentioned link, you can remove Lock Screen completely in Windows 10 using following steps:
In "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder, just rename "Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy" folder to "BACK_Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy" or any desired name. Now Windows will not show Lock Screen whenever you log out or lock your computer. It'll directly show Login Screen.
BONUS TIP 2: Disable or Remove Action Center and Notifications
If you don't like the new Action Center and its regular notifications in Windows 10
But still you'll receive a few notifications regularly in Windows 10. If you want to completely disable and remove Action Center and notifications, you can open "ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy" folder in "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder and then rename "Windows.UI.ActionCenter.dll" file to "BACK_Windows.UI.ActionCenter.dll" or any other desired name.
Disable_Shell_Experience_Host_Windows_10.png
BONUS TIP 3: Disable Metro Start Menu, Taskbar Jumplists and New Fly-out UI
Similarly if you want to disable Start Menu or Jumplists, open "ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy" folder in "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder and rename "StartUI.dll" and "JumpviewUI.dll" files respectively.
Following 4 DLL files are responsible to show new fly-out UI of Battery, Clock, Volume and Network icons in Taskbar notification area:
  • BatteryFlyoutExperience.dll
  • ClockFlyoutExperience.dll
  • MtcUvc.dll
  • NetworkUX.dll
You can rename these DLL files to disable the new fly-out UI of these icons.
PS: If you rename the "ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy" folder and restart your computer, it'll disable Start Menu, Jumplists and right-click on Taskbar Notification area. It'll also stop "ShellExperienceHost.exe" process running in background as this process is responsible for showing the new modern (metro) UI of all Taskbar and Start Menu stuff.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. You can safely rename "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps" folder to any name to prevent any installed app from running.
2. You can safely rename "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages" folder as well to prevent any built-in app from reinstalling itself in future.
3. DO NOT rename "C:\Windows\SystemApps" folder as it'll break down Windows functionality. You can rename sub-folders present inside it. But keep following 2 folders unchanged:
  • ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy
  • Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy
As we told above, the first folder "ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy" is responsible to show modern UI of Start Menu and Taskbar so renaming this folder will not allow you to use Start Menu and right-click on Taskbar items and system tray icons.
The second folder "Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy" will disable Lock Screen, so if you want to use Lock Screen, do not rename it.
4. If you find any difficulty in renaming any file or folder, take ownership of the file or folder first as mentioned in the beginning of the tutorial and then rename the file/folder.
5. You may need to restart your computer to take effect.
6. In future, if you want to restore any app, just restore the original name of the file/folder.
